Cetacean Cousins

Our Wildlife Rescue center took in a stranded and injured male bottlenose dolphin today found at Padre Island National Seashore. The dolphin was dehydrated with several lacerations and is missing part of its fluke. Although the cause of its injuries is unknown, a boat strike or even predation may have been a factor. Our partners at the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network transported this nearly 146 kg (320 lb) animal to our Rescue Center, where it was given fluids and its wounds were examined and treated before being placed into a seawater pool to begin its recovery. Although it's now in a safe environment where it can be carefully monitored, this dolphin is still in bad shape and has potentially months of rehabilitation ahead.
